What is Chiropractic?Chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health.
-
What is an Adjustment?Chiropractic adjustments involve the highly skilled application of a quick but gentle corrective force to the spinal vertebrae. The intent of an adjustment is to reduce pain and inflammation, reduces muscle spasm and tension, normalize spinal biomechanics, and more importantly, remove nerve irritation and interference caused by subluxations. As subluxations are corrected, your nervous system starts to function properly again and your body heals itself.
-
What is a Subluxation?Subluxations are problems of the spine that affect the nervous system as a whole. Vertebrae may be out of alignment or may have lost range of movement, pressing on nerves and interrupting communication between brain and body (and vice versa). Warning signs of subluxations include headaches, back pain, neck stiffness, pain in your shoulders, arms or legs and numbness in hands or feet. A subluxation usually is present long before it makes itself known.
-
What causes a Subluxation? There are three basic causes of vertebral subluxation. Physical stresses on the spine and nervous system may include slips and falls, motor vehicle accidents, repetitive motion, and improper sleeping. Chemical stress includes smoking, alcohol abuse, not drinking enough water, improper diet, or the overuse of drugs or medications. Finally, emotional stress is a major cause of subluxation due to its effect on the hormonal and muscular systems of the body.
-
What should I expect when I visit? At your first visit, we will conduct a complete health history to fully understand the source of your health concerns. Afterward, a thorough spinal examination will be performed to determine any abnormal postural, alignment and/or movement patterns and subluxations that may be impacting your nervous system and subsequent organ function. At your second visit, you will sit in on your doctor's report to gain a better understanding of what structural chiropractic is and the evidence supporting the specialized work that we do. We believe that there is a tremendous power in understanding how the body heals and the role that Chiropractic plays in that. This will be done in a small group setting with other new patients. The results of your examination will be reviewed privately as well as any radiographs that have been taken and a detailed recommendation of care will be discussed. A typical visit to our office once beginning your chiropractic care only takes a few minutes. Although the adjustment doesn't require much time, the effects are profound as it is what allows your body to begin the healing process.
-
How long until I feel better? Some patients experience almost instant relief. Others discover it can take several weeks or months. Many factors can affect the healing process, including: • The severity of the structural misalignments causing your problem. • How long you have had them. • How rapidly your body responds to chiropractic care, influenced by age, mental attitude, elasticity of the muscles and ligaments • Your ability to avoid additional stress and strain while your body is healing.
-
Will I have to keep coming forever? Not necessarily. Some people prefer to be treated only for a specific problem, and when the symptoms disappear they stop making appointments. Others use chiropractic care to fully correct the underlying cause of the symptoms and to remain feeling really well. The constant stress and wear of life, however, may make maintenance visits to a chiropractor a good addition to a healthy lifestyle.
-
Do I require a referral to visit a Chiropractor?Absolutely not. Doctors of Chiropractic are primary health care providers, meaning you do not need a referral. If yours is not a Chiropractic case, a responsible Chiropractor will refer you to the appropriate health care provider.
-
Is Chiropractic Care safe?Thousands of published scientific studies indicate chiropractic's safety and success rate. Chiropractic adjustments certainly are safer than surgical procedures and commonly used medications like muscle relaxers and painkillers.
